The New Year is here and many of us will already be planning how to make 2019 our most successful year yet. I’m a huge fan of finding tips and tricks to help you make the most out of your time and be the best you that you can be. So, to help you smash 2019, I’ve put together a list of my top 5 tips to be more productive for the new year.
Write To-Do lists
If you want to start being more productive, the easiest place to start is with to-do lists. If you don’t frequently make to-do-lists, you need to. It is a simple way to organise your thoughts and what you need to get done in a day, a week, or a month. But to make sure you are not writing lists that are too long to complete, or use writing to-do lists to procrastinate from actually doing the tasks on the list, set some order into your list. Write lists that put the tasks that are most important at the top so they can be tackled first, or group tasks together in different lists, such as one for household chores, so you don’t feel overwhelmed by an endless list. You could even write one for the week, then designate tasks from this list to each day. Find what works for you to make getting through your to-do list realistic.
Set achievable goals
As it’s the New Year, you will probably have made some New Year’s resolutions to make you a better person. But the problem with New Year’s resolutions, is that often we don’t make them into achievable goals. Achievable goals are targets we set ourselves that can be measured. For example, if you want to lose weight in 2019, don’t simply put ‘lose weight’ as your goal. Set a time frame and a target to the goal, such as lose a certain amount of weight in 6 months, or workout 3-5 times a week every week for a year. By making the goals moremeasurable, you are more likely to achieve them. Simply set clear targets, how you are going to measure your progress towards your goal and a realistic timeframe. Bigger goals can be broken up into smaller goals to make it easier to achieve over a longer period of time. Achieving goals that you set at the start of the year will motivate you to continue to achieve your targets, instead of being discouraged by not achieveing your goals.
Along with designating tasks to a to-do list and setting achievable goals for the year, a big step towards being more productive is learning how to manage your time correctly. This means that you not only designate tasks that you need to do, but also a reasonable amount of time to do them in. This helps prevent you spending too much time on one task, as well as helping you schedule in time to re-energise your mind. On a day-to-day basis, designate an hour, two hours, 10minutes – whatever the length of time, to different tasks, as well as setting aside time to renew your focus, like regular breaks from your work and at least 30 minutes for lunch away from your desk. By trying to map out how long different tasks will take you, you’ll have a better understanding of how much you can get done in a day and feel a sense of achievement when you get everything completed.
Focus on one task at once
It has been said before, and it’ll be said again – don’t multitask. Although a lot of us can multitask, and multitask very well, doing two things at once has been proven to be less productive than focusing on one task at a time. Our brains cannot effectively switch between different tasks, and it actually takes us four times longer to recognise new things. This means that when you’re multi-tasking, you’re not actually saving time, instead it can take longer than focusing on one activity.
Help your body focus
A healthy body means a healthy mind. With demanding schedules and day-to-day routines, it can seem impractical to keep healthy by eating well and regularly exercising. But in order to stay at your most productive level, keeping your body in top condition should be one of your most important priorities. When we are keeping our minds and bodies fuelled with good stuff and working efficiently, we help our brains to focus on daily tasks more. This includes making time for a feel-good breakfast each morning, getting a good nights’ sleep and exercising regularly.
